Today was expected to be the busiest holiday season shipping day for the United States Postal Service.

The lobby of the main post office on Henry Street in downtown Binghamton was bustling early this afternoon.

Although many people were shipping packages and buying stamps, the wait for those who visited the post office during their lunch hour was brief.

Postal service officials have estimated the agency will handle about 658 million pieces of mail today.

The downtown Binghamton post office was open longer than usual on Saturday to accomodate people shipping holiday packages.

People who want first class mail to arrive in time for Christmas should send their items by Thursday.

Priority mail items sent by Friday should arrive in time and items sent by Saturday using express mail should be delivered before Christmas.
