I love Girl Scout cookies and I buy at least one box whenever I see them. As much as I really like their cookies, I LOVE the work that they do. I think they do so much in our community and they deserve the accolades that they receive.

That's why I was thrilled when I heard that 29 girls in our area earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award in 2019-20 member year. The Gold Award stands for excellence and leadership and is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

The Girl Scout Gold Award

The standards required to earn this award are demanding but the rewards are many. The Gold Awards is the combination of a girl's demonstration of self-discipline, leadership ability, time management, creativity, and more.

The girls must dedicate at least 80 hours to planning and implementing their project and it must benefit the community and have a lasting impact. It's called the Gold Award for a reason and it's worth its weight in...gold.

Three of the "Class of 2020"  Gold Award Girl Scouts were given select honors.

1) Adeline Whitmore of Barton: She was the Marie Hepworth Scholarship winner for her project "Nichols Veterans Memorial Park."

2) Elizabeth Serafin of Oneonta: She was given the Kelly Perkins Scholarship for her project "Together We Grow, Gox Community Garden."

3) Dorothy (Dora) Donacik of Vestal: She was the recipient of the Kerrie Black Scholarship for her project "Promoting Creative Thinking at Vestal."

I'm so extremely proud of these young ladies and what they've accomplished. All 29 girls were recognized at a virtual event and you can go here to see the rest of the NYPENN Pathways "Class of 2020" Gold Award Girl Scouts winners.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of you. Help yourself to a box of Girl Scout cookies, you deserve it.
