You have probably heard of the local non-profit organization, AVRE, but are unsure who they are or what they do. AVRE is short for Association for Vision Rehabilitation and Employment.

AVRE serves people who are blind or visually impaired, from school-age children to seniors. According to their website, the organization offers a range of learning, living, and working options for people experiencing vision loss, throughout several New York State counties, including Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins.

AVRE is very active in the community, including an upcoming event - the 10th annual Nine At Night golf tournament featuring glow-in-the-dark golf balls on the Chenango Commons Golf Course, which will be unlit. Participants will test their skills by (hopefully) the light of the moon while supporting AVRE.

And on Tuesday. On August 27th, 2024, AVRE will present Representative Marc Molinaro with the AbilityOne Championship Plaque in honor of his support for the AbilityOne program. AVRE notes that AbilityOne is one of the largest sources of employment within the United States for people who are blind or who have severe disabilities.

I’m grateful to receive this recognition from AVRE. It’s crucial to ensure the AbilityOne Program reaches its full potential so individuals of every ability have the opportunity to succeed. I’m proud to lead the fight in Congress to provide more jobs to those with disabilities through the AbilityOne program." - Congressman Marc Molinaro

Through contracts with the Federal Government, AbilityOne provides opportunities for people who are blind or who have severe disabilities to advance their careers for their personal and economic independence. Over 90% of all director labor positions at AVRE are held by people who are blind or visually impaired.
