Apartments at Old Johnson City Phila. Sales Site Almost Ready
Hundreds of people soon will be living on the site of the iconic Philadelphia Sales store in Johnson City.
Construction crews now are applying the finishing touches to the $31 million apartment complex that's been built at 333 Grand Avenue.
The property had been home to the popular discount house known simply as "Phillies" to its loyal customers for several decades. The store closed its doors in 2008 and the strange-looking building it occupied was torn down a few years later.
The village of Johnson City had considered building a public works facility on the site but the four-acre parcel eventually was sold to Regan Development Corporation.
The Westchester County company worked with local and state officials to develop plans for the Homesteads on Grand residential project. It will include 27 one-bedroom units, 41 two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom apartments.
The complex also features 6,200-square-feet in non-residential space.
Tim Browne, the project superintendent who works for general contractor U.W. Marx Construction, said things have been moving well and he hopes the job can be wrapped up by the end of next month.
The project appears to be on track for completion slightly ahead of the originally-announced schedule.
Gabe Regan of the development company told WNBF News that he expects the first residents will be able to move in by December 1.
The apartment complex will be managed by The SEPP Group of Binghamton.
SEPP held a lottery to select the first applicants who will be given an opportunity to reside at Homesteads on Grand. Those who were chosen now are being vetted.
Regan said "we're excited" that the complex is about to be occupied.
