Apalachin Fire Station Closed Ahead of Demolition

An old fire station in Apalachin has been shut down as preparations are made to tear it down and replace it with a new facility.

Demolition work at the 65-year-old station at 230 Pennsylvania Avenue is scheduled to start in the first week of April. Asbestos remediation is expected to begin next Monday.

Brian Rieber, chairman of the Apalachin Board of Fire Commissioners, said the equipment that had been housed at Station One has been relocated to two other fire stations.

Rieber said the station that is being replaced went into service in 1952. An addition with two more truck bays was added in 1976.

Fire commissioners in December approved the $2.5 million project to build a new station at the site of the old facility.

Middendorf Contracting of Wysox was awarded the general trades contract for the project.

Rieber said site development work will take place after the old station has been removed. Actual construction of the new building could start in May or June. The project is expected to be substantially completed by October 1.

Rieber noted vehicles from Station One now are located outside the two other fire stations. He asked people to keep an eye on the equipment and report any suspicious activity they may observe.
