Law enforcement agencies in the Binghamton area are taking up the torch to help Special Olympics New York.

The annual Torch Run takes place May 31 starting at 2 p.m. at the Peace Quad at the Binghamton University Campus in Vestal and ends 1.5 miles to the east at Tully's restaurant on the Vestal Parkway at around 2:15 p.m.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run has taken place over 30 years, led by the "Guardians of the Flame."  The effort involves over 6,000 law enforcement personnel from 470 agencies throughout New York State.

The run raises money for Special Olympics and also promotes awareness of the talents and dreams of the special needs athletes.

The Special Olympics New York State Summer Games are being hosted this year by Siena College in Loudonville,New York June 15-17.
