$8 Million in Renovations Moving Forward at Binghamton Buildings

Construction crews are busy making extensive renovations to a large Binghamton apartment complex and three smaller buildings as part of an $8.1 million project.

Greater Opportunities acquired the properties on the city's North Side about a year ago.

Agency CEO Mark Silvanic said there's a waiting list for the 27 permanent supportive housing units that will become available through the project.

Most of the funding for the initiative is being provided by New York state's "Homeless Housing and Assistance Program." The city of Binghamton is contributing $540,000 to the project.

The rehabilitation plan was first announced in 2019 but work was delayed primarily because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Preparation work at the four sites on Munsell Street, Moffatt Avenue, Sturges Street and Way Street began last fall. The properties are in some of the city's most blighted neighborhoods where houses have fallen into disrepair and, in many cases, have been abandoned.

Silvanic said since the renovations started, things are "ahead of schedule overall." He said there have been some challenges in obtaining needed materials because of ongoing supply chain problems.

Silvanic said Greater Opportunities now plans to open the apartment buildings "as we finish them." Because of the great need for this type of housing in the Binghamton area, he said "we won't have any trouble filling them."
