Witnesses say a woman entered the burning building to help a man in a second-floor apartment escape. Fire officials say the woman was evaluated for possible smoke inhalation.

Fire marshal Daniel Eggleston said a firefighter sustained a minor injury when one of his hands was punctured by a nail. The firefighter did not require hospital treatment.

Two cats died in the fire. A dog inside the building at the time was not hurt.

Signs indicated the building housed JM Home Products and Painted Dreams Healing Arts Center.

Eggleston said the fire did not appear to be suspicious. He said it may have been linked to a wood stove in the rear section of the first floor.

Eggleston said the man who had been asleep when the fire broke out was the building owner. The man was alerted by a smoke detector.

Firefighters were on the scene for about three-and-a-half hours.
