An emergency evacuation order for some residents of Tioga County was sent out in error.

According to the sheriff's office, the inadvertent message was sent to telephones in the Richford area.

Officials had been concerned about a potential water hazard involving the Valley View Pond dam. They had been monitoring water levels at the dam Thursday evening.

A message that had been programmed into the county's reverse 911 system for possible future use was transmitted in error.

Emergency officials a short time later announced there was no need to evacuate and that the advisory had been released by mistake.

Officials say the Richford Fire Department with assistance from neighboring departments will siphon water from the Valley View Pond today to reduce the potential hazard at the dam.
