Area residents are being reminded to re-register for the STAR property tax exemption.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo says any homeowner whose combined household income is less than $500,000 is eligible to receive school property tax relief.  Seniors who have a total household income of $81,900 or less may also qualify.

There had been numerous reports of fraud with the Basic STAR program in the state, resulting in New York requiring homeowners who had received the exemption to re-register.

Seniors who have Enhanced STAR do not have to re-apply but will continue to have to verify their income every year.

A representative of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance can help with the registration process through December 6 at the State Office Building on Hawley Street in Binghamton from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration can also be done online at www.tax.ny.gov or by calling (518) 57-2036.

The registration deadline is December 31st.
