Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]A classroom building on the SUNY Broome Community College campus was evacuated for a short time because of an unusual odor.

Titchener Hall on the town of Dickinson campus was cleared as a precaution November 2.

A SUNY Broome spokeswoman said there apparently had been an "unusual smell" that originated in a boiler room in the building.

Several dozen students and employees were evacuated from Titchener Hall while the situation was investigated.

The spokeswoman said workers determined "flue gas had backed up in the boiler room" after a second boiler shut off. According to the facilities manager, there were no safety issues.

A statement released by the college indicated there was "never a high enough concentration of natural gas in the building to be more than a nuisance because of the awful sulfur smell."

The building was reopened at about 12:30 p.m.
