Economic development planners in the region, who have worked tirelessly putting together a five year plan in the hopes of winning $500 million in funding from New York State, will have to wait a few more weeks to hear if their work has paid off.

The Southern Tier is competing with six other regions for three awards and presented its case to the state October 20 focusing on three innovation districts, agriculture and food production.

The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council includes several counties in the region and is co-chaired by Binghamton University President, Dr. Harvey Stenger.

Economic development councils in the seven regions are in the running for a share of $1.5 billion.

A decision is expected by December.
