The Broome Sports Foundation awarded the Tommy Mitchell Memorial Scholarship to six outstanding area student athletes in ceremonies prior to Saturday night's Binghamton Senators game against the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Tommy Mitchell Memorial Scholarship was founded in memory of Tommy Mitchell, Jr.  Tommy was on his way to a youth hockey game when his car was involved in a tragic crash that took his life.  The Broome Sports Foundation raises funds through auctions, raffles and other events and awards several scholarships each Spring to outstanding students who have played youth hockey in either  the STHA or Broome County High School Hockey Association.

Over $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded to date.  The Broome Sports Foundation also awards scholarships every summer to outstanding high school baseball and softball players.

Tommy Mitchell Memorial Scholarship winners receiving awards Saturday include:

Melissa Ash, attending Buffalo State; Colin Szymanski, Maine-Endwell High School; Joseph Eiskant, Andrew Schutt, Matthew Wagner and Robert Wassel, all from Vestal High School.
