There is a career training center in the Southern Tier that prepares young people in several counties in the region for lucrative livelihoods and it's the focus of Saturday's Southern Tier Close Up.

Speaking on the weekly local public affairs program, admissions outreach specialist at the Oneonta Job Corps. Center, Lynn Price and admission counselor, Lisa Hall talk about all the programs offered locally to young people between the ages of 16 and 24.

Unlike other training programs, the Job Corps. Center teaches specific skills for careers as well as social skills and responsibility, all at a facility that even includes year-round dormitory housing, meals, activities and a wellness center.

Students don't have to live on campus, but most that live further than 10 miles away, opt to reside at the Center.

Hall and Price also detail the requirements for young people to participate in the program and how the Center pairs with area businesses to successfully match them with new, highly qualified employees.

Price says the best way to get information is to contact the Center by phone at (607) 431-1445.

There are Job Corps. Centers located in other parts of the country, offering additional programs. That information can be found at www.recruiting.jobcorps.gov.

Southern Tier Close Up can be heard Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
