The New York State Public High School Athletic  Association Baseball Championships were played in Broome County yesterday.  Friday's heavy rains delayed the start of the first semi-final round games at four of the five venues.  Gary Crooks Field at Maine-Endwell has artificial turf and games were played there as scheduled.

Two Section 4 teams failed in bids to win a state title.  Seton Catholic Central was shutout 2-0 by Hoosic Valley from Section 2 at Conlon Field in a semi-final battle.  The Saints were attempting to win their second consecutive Class C championship.

In Class D the Hancock Wildcats topped Heuvelton 3-1 at SUNY Broome in their semi-final contest.  But the title game was won by Smithtown Christian out of Section 11.  They defeated Hancock 7-3 to win the state crown.

Elsewhere in Class AA at Maine-Endwell Victor emerged with a 3-0 win over Shenendehowa to claim the title.  At Union-Endicott the Class A Championship went to Bayport-Blue Point 13 -2 over Rye.  At Binghamton University Schalmont from Section 2 defeated Rye Neck 3-1.

This marked the 12th consecutive year New York State has held high school baseball championships in Broome County.  Grounds crews turned in outstanding work to make all fields playable following heavy downpours that hit the region on Friday evening.
