The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting comments from the public on plans to clean up chemical contamination at the TCMF Hillcrest facility on Nowlan Road.  The comments will be accepted through January 19.

The site, located next to the Chenango Valley Cemetery, had been the site of a facility that performed metal plating on products for the military, aerospace and automotive industries from 1953 to 1999.

The DEC says wastewater from the manufacturing process was released into drywells on site.

The building was used for storage from 1993 to 2002 and is again being used for manufacturing since 2012.

The DEC says currently no plating operations are being done at the site.

The Draft Remedial Work Plan includes excavation and treatment of contaminated soil and the sealing of the site with a cover system.

More information on the Draft Remedial Work Plans can be found at the Region 7 office at 1679 Route 11 in Kirkwood.  Call (607) 775-2545 for an appointment.  Documents are also available at the Fenton Free Library at 1062 Chenango Street in Hillcrest.

Additional details, including environmental and health assessment summaries, are available on NYSDEC’s website: www.dec.ny.gov.
