Construction is expected to begin in the near future on a new outdoor ice skating rink at Highland Park in Endwell.

Broome County officials have announced the county is donating the dasher boards for the Town of Union rink.

Town Supervisor, Rose Sotak said the need for a new ice rink quickly became evident after the Grippen Park rink was closed following the 2011 flood.

Officials say the new facility could become a destination for families outside of Broome County as well.

The Skating Community for Opportunities in Recreation and Enrichment, or S.C.O.R.E. is partnering with the Town for the development of the rink.

S.C.O.R.E. even recently bought a used Zamboni ice resurfacing vehicle from the County at a public auction.

County officials say the ice rink will be available to teams and individuals free of charge.

There are also plans for a sledding hill near the rink and a future concession stand.

If the weather cooperates, Town officials say they hope the rink will be ready to greet skaters before Christmas.
