History professor Douglas Garnar plans to give his final lecture next week.

According to the school, Garnar will reflect on his 43-year career and the efforts of the college's mission to graduate "engaged citizens" who will become more involved in their communities.

In 1947, a higher education commission appointed by President Harry Truman referred to community colleges as "democracy's college." The title of Garnar's final lecture at SUNY Broome will be "Democracy's College."

The lecture will be presented on Thursday, April 30, at 3 p.m. in the Decker Health Sciences Building.

Garnar says he intends to remain active in the community after his retirement.

Professor Garnar will discuss his career and his plans for the future on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program on Wednesday, April 29, at 9:30 a.m.
