There will be a Spiedie Fest this year in Broome County but just what it will look like remains to be determined.

During his weekly COVID-19 pandemic update on April 28, County Executive Jason Garnar was asked about the status of the annual food and arts festival and hot air balloon rally as more restrictions on events that were put into effect last year to curb the spread of the coronavirus start to ease.

Garnar says organizers and the county continue to meet to talk about how to hold the festival, which was cancelled altogether last year.  But he says Spiedie Fest WILL be held at Otsiningo Park this year.  With the traditional date for the County’s largest festival several months off.. in early August.. Garnar says there is no way to know what rules will be in play at this point.

When asked about his brief encounter with Governor Andrew Cuomo in Johnson City earlier this week, Garnar said during the pandemic, the County has gotten most of what it has needed from the state as far as vaccine and testing support.  The Democrat did admit, however, he would still like to see a little more local control over COVID-19 restrictions like setting the capacity limits for things like Rumble Ponies games, for example.
