A Waverly building is described as a total loss as a result of a cooking fire.

A tenant on the third floor was taken to the hospital for treatment of burns to his arm, face and chest.

The blaze on Broad Street was reported at around 11:30 a.m. January 1.

Firefighters from Waverly, Sayre and Athens spent about five hours on the scene.

Two cats were rescued from the structure in the downtown district that housed commercial space in addition to several apartments.
