Several people fled to safety when a fire broke out in an apartment building on Binghamton's North Side.

Thursday morning's blaze at 34 Pearne Street was reported at 5:53.

Authorities say the fire was knocked down about ten minutes later. It was declared under control at 6:12.

Two adults and four young children lived in the second-floor apartment, where the fire originated. Three adults were in the apartment below.

Binghamton Fire Department Captain Timothy Dahulich said the blaze originated in a bedroom. Most of the fire damage was confined to that room and its contents.

Much of the second-floor apartment sustained smoke and water damage. There was water damage to the first-floor apartment.

Dahulich said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Those displaced by the blaze were staying with relatives in Binghamton. The Red Cross was called to provide assistance.
