FedEx Freight has shifted its Southern Tier operations from Broome County to a just-constructed service center in Tioga County.

The new cross dock facility off Stanton Hill Road in the Town of Nichols opened on March 13.

FedEx Freight closed a smaller operation on Industrial Park Road in the Town of Kirkwood. Property records indicate FedEx acquired that site in 2003.

A FedEx spokesman said the company is looking for a buyer for the old site, which has a full market value of about $691,000.

The spokesman said 43 people work at the recently-opened facility. The new operation has a vehicle maintenance shop, which did not exist at the Kirkwood site.

The complex was built on a 21-acre site located near a Best Buy distribution center and an Army Reserve Center that opened in 2014.

Construction on the FedEx project was delayed because of marshland issues at the site. Additional preparation work was needed before the project could move forward. Wells were drilled to pump water on the property.

The 24,000-square-foot service center has 52 truck docks, double the number at the Kirkwood facility. The site has space to expand to up to 88 doors in the future.

The Tioga County Industrial Development Agency approved a tax break package for the project.

A ceremony to mark the opening of the facility is expected to be held in April.
