The owners of Ellis Brothers Furniture say they are planning not only a rebuilding, but a large expansion in the wake of the devastating fire that destroyed the Contemporary Furniture Showroom on Water Street in downtown Binghamton April 30.

The family is applying to the City to move into the former J.C. Penny department store, which also once housed the American Red Cross Blood Center and currently home to a large hair salon and some offices at the corner of Court Street and Hawley Street.

The plans are to expand the business to offer not only contemporary designs but also baby furniture and other décor in the larger space.

There is no word on what is to happen to the businesses that are currently located at 1 Hawley Street.

The plans still need approval from City planners.

The soon to be cleared site on Water Street is expected to be turned into parking space for the current Ellis Brothers Store at the Metro Center on Washington Street and, if approved, the new space downtown.
