A Republican candidate has announced he'll challenge Democratic Broome County District Attorney Gerald Mollen in November.

42-year-old Steve Cornwell of Endicott operates a law firm in Binghamton.

Cornwell was joined by family members, friends and supporters for his announcement June 1.

Cornwell said "big changes" are needed in the district attorney's office. He said it's time for "new ideas and new leadership" to address crime in the county.

Cornwell has practiced criminal and family law at the firm he founded in June 2005. He also worked in the district attorney's office as a prosecutor from 2007 to 2009.

Mollen was first elected district attorney in 1987. In April, he announced plans to seek an eighth term.

The 62-year-old Mollen said he's looking forward to another term as the county's chief prosecutor. He said there are "still things to be done."
