The 31st Annual Chris Thater Memorial is underway in Downtown Binghamton.  Racing began this morning at 9:30.  Chris Thater was a 23 year-old cycling enthusiast and Binghamton University graduate who was killed by a drunk driver on October 16, 1983.  The Broome County STOP-DWI Program started an annual bicycle race in his honor the following year.

Downtown Binghamton has been transformed into racing central. There will be 18 cycling events over the weekend with major races this evening and tomorrow morning.  Tonight at 6 the Women's Pro/1-2/U23 race will be held.That will be followed at 8 PM by the Men's Pro/1/U23 .  Tomorrow morning at 11 the Women's Pro 1/2/3 is scheduled followed by the Men's Pro 1/2 at 12:30 PM.

For runners the Thater 5K Race begins today at 5:15 PM.  Other events include a Health and Wellness Expo today until 8 PM and the 2014 Patrolman Lee Barta Crossfit Challenge.  Court Street is blocked off from Chenango to Water Street and State Street is blocked from Henry to Hawley Streets with the exception of access to the city-operated parking ramps.  There is no spectator admission fee for the cycling events.
