For the first time in over two decades the Chris Thater Memorial Races were held in Downtown Binghamton and drew lots of fans watching all around the city streets designated for the raceway.  The start and finish line was at the intersection of Court and State Streets.  The race had been held at Recreation Park on the West side of Binghamton.

There were 18 cycling races held over two days and those included youngsters through 55 plus age groups.  The men's and women's pro events drew the most spectators.  Saturday's afternoon events had to battle rain and drizzle while Sunday finished with beautiful, Sunny weather.

The races showcased Binghamton and brought a number of new people into the Downtown area.  The event was established in memory of Chris Thater, a Binghamton University graduate who was killed by a drunk driver.  The Broome County Stop-DWI Program organizes and holds the annual event to emphasize the dangers of drunk driving.
