Binghamton Bearcats Win Softball Opener
The Binghamton Bearcats softball team escaped the winter snow and storms and opened the season yesterday in Tampa, Florida as they defeated the South Florida Bulls 1-0. Senior Demi Laney threw a complete-game shutout giving up seven hits and striking out four to record the victory.
It was the first game for the Bearcats in the University of South Florida Tournament. The loss dropped the Bulls to 2-3. Lisa Cutrona scored the only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a Bulls’ infield error. The win was head coach Michelle Burrell’s 100th in her fifth season at Binghamton University.
The Bearcats played their second game of the day against the top-ranked team in the nation, the Tennessee Volunteers. The Vols rolled to a 10-0 victory upping their record to 6-0.
The Bearcats are in action today facing Wright State and Illinois. The tournament features tough competition with Tennesse at the top of the national polls and South Florida garnering votes in the NFCA Top 25 poll.
