A deal worked out in Washington is restoring the full funding to transit programs in High Density States and that includes over $1 million for the Broome, Tompkins and Chemung County transit systems.  Over $600,000 is earmarked for BC Transit.

The Transportation Conference Committee report is expected to be passed by Congress and signed by the President next week.

The largest amount of the High Density States program funding would go to areas like Chicago and New York City for rail and other public transportation systems.

Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Richard Hanna say the restoration of funding to the program is vital to local and state economies.

A provision that had been in the original bill, to pay compensation to families of people who died as a result of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, was left out of the final proposal.
