Alien Apple Pie  (prep. time about 20 minutes. Serves 6)

2 large Cortland apples

½ stick butter

½ C. raisins

¼ tsp. each ginger & nutmeg

½ tsp. cinnamon

pinch of salt

1 Tb. flour

2 Tb. prepared pie crust

your favorite sugar cookie dough (or purchased)

candy pearls, sprinkles.

1 egg

2 Tb. milk

(you can leave out the sugar cookie alien and just make these nice, individual hand-pies using whatever fruit filling you like)

Make your own favorite pie crust and sugar cookie recipes or buy prepared to save time.

Preheat oven to 365.  Peel the apples, remove core and seeds and dice into bite-sized pieces.  In a skillet, melt the butter and saute the apples and raisins until the apples start to soften. Stir in the spices and salt.  Thicken the compote by stirring in some flour.  Simmer for two or three minutes to cook out the raw flour flavor.  Beat together the egg and milk to make an egg wash.

Roll out the pie crust and cut into about 3 inch circles.  Spoon apple and raisin mix into the center. Brush the edges of the crust with egg wash and place another circle of dough on top. Press to seal.  Cut a slit in the center of the crust to hold the cookie alien.  Brush more egg wash on the top crust and press candy pearls around the edge of your ‘space craft’.  Set pies on a parchment lined baking sheet in the refrigerator to chill while you cut  out your space alien shapes.  Brush the aliens with egg wash and press pieces of raisins into the face for eyes.  Sprinkle the whole alien with green sugar sprinkles.  Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake until golden brown.  Put the pies in the oven and bake until crust is brown.  Let the pastries cool a little before inserting the alien into the center of the space ship.
