A Chenango County dairy farmer will be assessing thousands of dollars in loss after a huge fire destroyed a barn full of cows.

Emergency Services Dispatchers say the blaze on State Highway 41 in Afton, right on the Broome County Line, was reported at around 1 a.m. February 16 and drew ten fire departments from four counties.

Firefighters were able to save a few of the animals but there was no positive count on the number of cows lost.

There were no human injuries reported.

Firefighters have been on the scene for hours and officials say water had to be brought in from a pond about a mile away.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
