Work Underway on Owego Town Shared Services Building

Site preparation work has started on a $9.4 million project next to the Town of Owego government office building.

The facility is to be constructed on a five-acre site just west of the town hall on Route 434.

Town supervisor Donald Castellucci said discussion about the project started about five years ago.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Castellucci said work on the building itself is expected to begin soon. He said the goal is to have the new structure enclosed before cold weather returns so interior work can take place during the winter.

Castellucci said one aspect of the project - directional drilling to allow water and sewer lines to be placed under Route 17 and the Susquehanna River - has been completed.

The new building will house the town parks and highway departments. It also will have space for the administrative offices for the utilities department.

The town is borrowing $6 million for the project. About $3.1 million in state money is being used to cover some of the cost.

Castellucci said the facility is expected to be ready for use in about a year.
