Police say a driver distracted by her husband overdosing on heroin while their one-year-old son was riding unsecured in the vehicle caused a four-car pile up near Johnson City.

The chain-reaction crash happened on Main Street in Westover around 1:45 p.m. Friday.

Authorities say 30-year-old Rebecca Crane of Sayre was driving west when it slammed into two vehicles stopped at a red light. Those cars then were hit by another car.

Crane told sheriff's deputies she was distracted by her husband in the front seat because he was having trouble breathing. It turned out 33-year-old Gary Crane had overdosed on heroin. Emergency measures were taken and he recovered.

The toddler in the back seat of the Crane vehicle was not hurt.

Investigators determined Rebecca Crane was impaired by drugs. She was charged with driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle, a felony. She faces several other charges, including driving while ability impaired by drugs and possession of a controlled substance.

The driver was arraigned and sent to Broome County Jail without bail. Authorities expect to file more charges.
