Woman’s Body Found in Susquehanna River in Binghamton
Binghamton police are investigating the death of a person whose body was discovered in the Susquehanna River.
A man reportedly called authorities shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday after discovering the body on the south side of the river, just off Pennsylvania Avenue.
The body was said to have been located near the shoreline, a short distance from a city-operated pumping station near an entrance ramp to the Vestal Parkway. The site is directly across the river from the Five Riverside Tower luxury apartment complex on Riverside Drive.
Binghamton police detective Lieutenant Matthew Hodnik said the body was that of an adult woman. He declined to release her name, age or hometown but said her family had been notified.
Hodnik said the city fire department was called to assist police in removing the woman's body. He said an autopsy was performed but he would not comment on a likely cause of death. He said investigators are awaiting additional information.
Hodnik said there initially has been no indication of any criminality involved in the death. He would not say how long police believe the body had been in the river or whether the woman had been reported missing.
People who live and work in that area of the city's South Side expressed surprise upon learning that a body had been found in the river.
