Broome County chief assistant district attorney Michael Korchak wants the job now held by his boss.

Korchak is seeking the Republican nomination for Broome County District Attorney. He announced his intention to run after Stephen Cornwell revealed he would not seek a second four-year term.

Korchak has been a prosecutor in the Bronx and Broome County. He was became an assistant district attorney in the Bronx in 1989.

Korchak eventually moved to the Binghamton area to be closer to his wife's family. He spent more than a decade working in the Broome County DA's office before unsuccessfully challenging district attorney Gerald Mollen in 2007.

Korchak then spent several years in private practice before he rejoined the district attorney's office after Cornwell was elected in 2015.

Paul Battisti also has announced he is seeking the Republican nomination as Broome district attorney this year.
