Winter Weather Advisories Expanded in Twin Tiers

Winter isn't through with the Twin Tiers just yet with several inches of snow anticipated for the region overnight March 31 through early April 1.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton had Winter Weather Advisories issued for Cortland and Tompkins Counties and points west and north of Binghamton on March 30 but expanded the Advisory area at 4 a.m. March 31 to include the entire Twin Tiers region.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 11 p.m. March 31 to 5 p.m. April 1 for Broome, Cortland, Chenango, Tioga, Tompkins and Delaware Counties in New York and Bradford, and Susquehanna Counties in Pennsylvania.

NOAA says snow fall accumulations could reach four to six inches with several hours of snowfall rates of a half to one inch per hour overnight and into the early morning hours of Thursday, April 1.

Motorists are being warned to anticipate slippery road conditions for the Thursday morning commute.

In addition, heavy, wet snow could lead to scattered power outages and the snow will be difficult to shovel.

Higher snow accumulations can be expected in the higher elevations.  While road temperatures are fairly warm, the fast snowfall rate could be enough to still result in snow sticking to road surfaces.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is also reminding motorists to adjust speeds based on driving conditions. PennDOT often reduces speed limits on the Interstates when winter weather conditions warrant.
