Alcohol has been cited as a factor after a driver was killed when a vehicle slammed into a tree in the town of Windsor.

Authorities say 57-year-old Stephen Rynearson of Windsor was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on Route 79 near the North Windsor Berries farm.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, Rynearson was driving a 1995 GMC van northbound when the vehicle went off the roadway on a curve, striking a tree.

Investigators say Rynearson was not wearing a seatbelt. They concluded alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

The sheriff's office has closed its investigation into the crash.

Several agencies including the Windsor Fire Department, New York State Police and the New York State Department of Transportation assisted sheriff's deputies at the scene.
