The registration for my wife's vehicle is due next month, and I'm usually the one who fills out the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles paperwork to get it registered for the next two years.

So, I checked what the cost is to register her vehicle and was surprised at how much cheaper it is to register than my van is. Granted my van is bigger but the price was quite a bit different.

The New York State DMV continues to give you a choice to continue using the gold and blue plates which are over 10 years old, provided they are still readable or go with the new Excelsior plates which are blue, white, and gold, and features pictures of the Niagara Falls, the Adirondack Mountains, New York City skyline and a lighthouse.

And of course, we have options as to what we want to do come registration time. By that, I mean, do we keep the current plates, which are the next to the newest plate design (Excelsior plates), or do we get the newest design with a new randomly given combination of letters and numbers? Or do we go with the new plate keeping the old letter and number combination?

The difference? For my wife's vehicle, just renewing the registration with the old plate and letter-number combination is $65 dollars. The newest plate design with a new randomly chosen letter-number combination s is $90 dollars. The newest plate design with the current letter-number combination is $110 dollars.

I asked my wife which choice license plate she preferred when it is time to renew her vehicle's registration, and she replied she didn't care either way. I'm siding on the newest design with new randomly picked letters and numbers.

By the way, did you know that New York State license plates are made by inmates at the Auburn Correctional Facility? That's a fact, Jack...or whatever your name is.
