Veterans Day was established after an unknown World War I American soldier was interred at Arlington National Cemetery on November 11, 1921. The date was chosen specifically to recognize World War I officially ended on November 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). This day became widely known as “Armistice Day” and was officially recognized by Congress in 1926. After WWII, Congress passed a resolution to proclaim November 11 as Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11, 2025. There are many things happening throughout the Southern Tier of New York to honor our veterans. Here are many ways you can honor and celebrate our Veterans:

Binghamton Veterans Day Parade

The annual Veterans Day parade is set for Downtown Binghamton. According to Event Manager Darlene Croston, the parade will kick off at 1 p.m. on November 11th at the American Legion Post 80, 76 Main Street, heading east on Main and Court Street, ending at the Broome County Courthouse.

The viewing stand will be located near the County Courthouse. The Veterans Day parade emcee is Broome County Clerk Joseph Mihalko.

Binghamton Hometown Heroes

Another important event coming up soon: The Binghamton Hometown Heroes Committee ceremony will honor an additional 29 new Binghamton Hometown Heroes banners on Thursday November 6th.

The induction ceremony will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on the 2nd floor concourse of the Vision Veterans Arena in Binghamton.  It's open to the public to show support for our Hometown Heroes.

29 new banners that will be installed down Front Street between Bevier and Prospect streets. See below for the names of the 29 Hometown Heroes.

Finally, all veterans and their families and friends are invited to a special Veterans’ Recognition at all Broome County local senior centers on Monday, November 10th from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., except for Deposit at 14 Monument Street. That event will be held on Thursday, November 6th in the evening.

Call the center of your choice to make a lunch reservation by 12 noon Friday, November 7th. The Deposit location deadline has already passed.
