The Head Certified Athletic Trainer and Assistant Director of Athletics at SUNY Broome Community College has received regional recognition for his service, dedication and care for student athletes under his supervision.  Jon R. Smith is the recipient of the NJCAA Region lll Athletic Trainer of the Year Award for 2017-18.  It is the first such award issued in Region lll.  The award was presented at a Region III Athletic Directors meeting in Watertown on September 19th. Region III is comprised of 22 community colleges located around Upstate New York.

Smith is a native of Toronto, Ohio and spent 18 years working in professional hockey including stints with the Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers organizations.  Following his career in professional hockey Smith joined the Sports Medicine staff at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton before taking over his duties at SUNY Broome.

Smith has received numerous awards for his work in athletic training.  He has been honored with induction into the Toronto, Ohio High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
