After nearly six decades, the Vestal American Legion Hall may be torn down to make way for a new fire station.

A referendum is to be held on a plan to borrow up to $612,500 to purchase the three-and-a-half acre site at 118 Jensen Road.

Vestal Fire District voters next week will decide whether to move forward on the proposal to replace Station Four with a new facility that would be constructed at the legion site.

The June 12 special election would be the first key step in relocating the station from the Vestal Parkway just east of Jensen Road.

Town supervisor John Schaffer said a few people expressed concerns about the plan during a public information session. But he believes most people in the town will support the proposal.

The American Legion Post 89 has been located at the Jensen Road property for nearly six decades. The post built the current facility after it was forced to leave a site on Vestal Road when the Route 17 Expressway was being constructed.

If voters approve the purchase of the site just south of the Kohl's store, the town would issue a request for proposals for an architect to design a new fire station.

Schaffer said the design work would likely take a couple of years to complete.

If the station is moved from the Vestal Parkway, the site of the old facility could be sold for future development.

Voting on the property purchase will take place at the Vestal Town Hall on June 12 from noon to 9 p.m.
