A hotel is to be built on the site of a popular Vestal restaurant.

Demolition crews have torn down the Vestal Parkway building that had been home to the Plaza Diner.

The business had operated at the site west of Binghamton University for seven years.

The restaurant closed in April and its operators opened up at the Take-A-Break restaurant site on Vestal Road a short time later.

Demolition work at the old restaurant building started late last week and is nearly completed.

The site is being cleared for construction of an extended stay hotel called Candlewood Suites.

Work on the four-story, 48,000 square foot building is expected to start soon. Plans call for the hotel to open around the middle of next year.

Hotel owner Thomas Bedosky could not be reached for comment on the project.
