Vestal Dick’s Sporting Goods Store Closes After Three Decades
The Dick's Sporting Goods store that was a fixture in Vestal's Town Square Mall for nearly 31 years has shut its doors.
Signs at the entrance of the 47,000-square-foot-store on the Vestal Parkway advised would-be customers that the place is permanently closed.
The shutdown occurred on the eve of the soft opening of the company's massive new store at the Oakdale Commons in Johnson City.
The new-format 140,000-square-foot retail outlet has been described as the company's largest store - three times the space of the Vestal location.
The Johnson City store opened almost a year after the public announcement of the project.
The Dick's Sporting Goods store opened at the Town Square Mall in Vestal in October 1992.
It's unclear what will happen to the space that had been occupied by the store. The retail complex is operated by Brixmor Property Group. A company leasing representative said the Dick's Sporting Goods lease has not expired and he didn't know of future plans for the site.
Although the Johnson City House of Sport store has started operations, the location's "grand opening" events are scheduled for later this month.
The new store serves as the south anchor of what had been the Oakdale Mall. The regional shopping center is being reinvented with the addition of additional retailers and restaurants.
