A few freight cars left the tracks at the Binghamton terminal in the town of Conklin. Two of the cars were loaded with what appeared to be lumber products from Canada. A box car also derailed but it was not known what it was hauling.

It appeared no hazardous materials were involved in the derailment. Police and fire departments were not at the scene.

Norfolk Southern employees declined to comment at the scene of the derailment Monday morning. A spokesman at the company's Harrisburg division office did not immediately return a call seeking information about the incident.

It could not be determined whether anyone was injured. It was not known what caused the derailment.

Several workers were busy at the site where the cars derailed just a few feet south of Conklin Road. The affected cars were about 15 feet from the sidewalk along the street.

Vehicular traffic along Conklin Road and Holmes Place, south of the derailment, was not affected.
