Broome County Emergency Services officials say cleanup was expected to take hours after a tractor trailer carrying garbage tipped over on State Route 17 westbound near Exit 80 (Damascus).

The crash happened shortly after 5:30 a.m. May 1 as the truck, reportedly traveling from New Jersey overturned, spilling a portion of its load and spilling diesel fuel.

While not all of the lanes of the highway were blocked by trash, traffic was being detoured off the Southern Tier Expressway at Exit 81 around the accident scene.

There were no reports of injuries and the cause of the crash is under investigation.
