Two Broome County women are among over a half dozen regional volunteers from the American Red Cross being deployed to areas impacted by tornadoes and flooding in the Midwest.

Jeanne Frey of Binghamton works in Recovery Services and is heading to Missouri while Diane Zavada from Vestal works in Sheltering and is deployed to Oklahoma.

The entire state of Oklahoma is under a state of emergency with the Arkansas River above flood stage. The Red Cross says it has nine shelters open in that state with shelters also open in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas due to flooding.

The Red Cross has currently sent out more than 650 trained disaster workers to help people impacted by the storms.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service is confirming it was a tornado that wreaked havoc on part of Northeast Pennsylvania this week.

Damage from an EF1 tornado was surveyed by officials in Bradford County in the area of Rome near Sheshequin. Several buildings sustained roof and siding damage and insulation and other debris could be seen strewn around lawns and fields and hanging on buildings and trees.  There were no injuries reported from Tuesday afternoon’s storms.

The National Weather Service put the wind speeds at between 100 to 110 miles per hour.
