State Route 26 in Endicott Closed After Pumps Fail to Operate

A section of New York state Route 26 in Endicott was shut down for several hours because of flooding related to a pumping system problem.

The trouble occurred at the railroad underpass on Nanticoke Avenue near the Cider Mill.

According to the state Department of Transportation, the affected area was closed to traffic around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. Motorists were detoured onto Jennings Street and West Union Street.

A DOT spokesperson said the roadway was reopened shortly after 11 a.m.

Workers at the site would not say whether there had been an electrical problem or a mechanical issue that prevented the pumps from operating properly.

Flooding at the Nanticoke Avenue underpass occurred earlier this year when there was a power outage in the neighborhood. No outages in the area were reported Wednesday morning.

Endicott police units and DOT crews were dispatched to the area to keep vehicles from attempting to drive through the high water.
