Tompkins County Health Department Issues Coronavirus Advisory
The Tompkins County Health Department says it is taking steps to work with local medical providers in that area including Cornell Health, Ithaca College Health Center and Cayuga Medical Center to guard against the Coronavirus.
The department issued an advisory January 27 asking people who recently traveled to China and have a fever, cough or shortness of breath to contact their medical provider and stay home to avoid contact with others.
The news release from the health department did not mention any incidents or suspicions of exposure to the new corona virus in the Finger Lakes area.
Given the nature of modern society with global travel more commonplace, authorities say it should come as no surprise that areas like the Southern Tier should be vigilant to the possibility of exposure to viruses and other infections from elsewhere in the world.
Binghamton University, Cornell University, SUNY Broome Community College, Ithaca College and others enroll international students studying in the region.
Tompkins County Health officials say, as should be the case during the current flu season, everyone should be mindful to cover a cough or sneeze, wash hands frequently and regularly clean and disinfect surfaces.
