A Newark Valley man who was shot by a state trooper now has been charged with attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer.

Authorities say 22-year-old Nathanial Gaylord was arrested Wednesday after he was released from Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

According to New York State Police, Gaylord pointed a shotgun at police officers who responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a Chamberlain Road residence last Friday.

Officials say Investigator Justin Wilt shot Gaylord after he ignored orders to drop the weapon. Wilt was not hurt.

In addition to the attempted aggravated assault count, Gaylord was charged with menacing a police officer. He was arraigned and sent to Tioga County Jail on $20,000 bail.

Investigators have said at least one shot reportedly had been fired before police arrived at the scene of the disturbance. It's not known whether additional charges are being considered in connection with the incident.
