The Volunteers of America is being called 'one of the best-kept secrets in Broome County.'

Speaking on the local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up on April 26, VOA Vice President of Supportive Housing in Binghamton, Lisa Cioci says the charity operates numerous housing and support programs in the region, many of which, like a transition program for paroled inmates, are largely unknown by residents.

Unlike many other groups that operate shelters, Cioci says the VOA is able to keep families who are displaced together in temporary housing instead of placing them in separate shelters for men and women.

The Volunteers of America as also recently opened its first 'resale' store in Broome County at 519 Hooper Road in Endwell.  The store resells gently used housewares and clothing.

Cioci says in addition to donations of goods for the resale store, the VOA always needs volunteers in numerous capacities.

More information about the VOA can be found at www.voaupny.org or by calling the local Binghamton office at (607) 772-1156.

Southern Tier Close Up is heard Saturdays at  12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
