Jeff Boughton's sense of humor lives on after his death, thanks to an obituary that has a lot of people talking - and chuckling.

The 62-year-old Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, man died after a six-year battle with cancer.

Boughton's obituary, which appeared in newspapers in Binghamton and Scranton, was a bit unusual. It starts by noting "he lost his life on August 7," followed by: "We have been looking for him ever since but we can't find him."

The notice states he was last seen by his wife, Nancy, at their home and that "Ajax Investigations" has been hired to locate him.

The obituary then suggests where Boughton may have been found in the past, places like a car auction or spending time with his grandchildren.

Nancy Boughton said her husband collaborated with others who knew him well last November to prepare the notice for when it would be needed.

She said it was a "joint effort" that involved the whole family. It was written, she said, to honor Jeff's "quick and witty humor."

She added her husband in the past referred to "Ajax Investigations" in letters he wrote to the local newspaper in Susquehanna.

Nancy Boughton said she knew people who knew her husband would appreciate the unusual obituary and that some people might be confused by it.

People who read the tribute to Jeff Boughton commented on it on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program and in an online guest book.

Many who didn't know him said they admired the way Boughton's family celebrated his life.

The family will receive visitors at Hennessey's Funeral Home in Susquehanna Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. A memorial service is to be held at Brushville Baptist Church Saturday at 11 a.m.
